LLM optimization is the work of making your website easy for AI tools like ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Claude to find, understand, and cite. It matters because more people now type a question into an AI assistant before they ever look at a list of search results. If your content isn’t written and structured so those systems can read it and trust it, the AI will recommend another firm. At Peak Marketing, we treat LLM optimization as an extension of good SEO, not a replacement for it. The firms that rank well on Google today already have a head start. The ones that ignore how AI reads their pages will slowly lose ground they don’t even know they’re losing.
What LLM Optimization Actually Means
You’ll also see this called generative engine optimization (GEO) or answer engine optimization (AEO). The labels overlap, and the goal is the same. When someone asks an AI tool “What should I do after a car accident in Boise?”, you want the answer to draw from your page and, ideally, name your firm.
Traditional search engines rank whole pages. Language models build answers from pieces of pages. That single difference changes what good content looks like. A page can rank on page one and still never get quoted by an AI, because the useful answer is buried in the middle of a long paragraph.
How AI Assistants Decide What to Cite
Many AI search tools run a live web search behind the scenes, pull a handful of pages, and then extract the passages that answer the question most directly. Google’s AI Overviews draw from Google’s own index. ChatGPT search and Perplexity use their own crawlers along with search partners.
A few things raise the odds that your page gets picked:
- The answer appears near the top of a section, stated plainly.
- The page can be crawled. If your robots.txt blocks AI crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot, those tools can’t read you.
- The facts match what other trusted sources say about your firm and your practice area.
- The site shows clear signs of real expertise, like attorney bylines and bar admissions.
None of this is exotic. It is mostly the same discipline good SEO has always required, applied with more precision.
Why This Hits Law Firms Harder Than Most Businesses
Legal questions are exactly the kind people bring to AI. “Can my employer fire me for filing a workers’ comp claim?” “How much is my slip and fall case worth?” The person asking wants a straight answer first and a lawyer second. If the AI names your firm in that first answer, you are the first call.
Legal content also falls into what Google calls “Your Money or Your Life” topics. Google holds these pages to a higher standard of trust, and AI systems built on top of search inherit that caution. Thin, unsigned, or outdated legal pages get passed over.
What LLM Optimization Looks Like in Practice
Put the answer in the first sentence
Every section should open with the direct answer, then explain. Suppose a heading reads “How long do I have to file a personal injury claim in Idaho?” The first sentence should say that Idaho generally gives you two years from the date of the injury. Exceptions and details come after. An AI can lift that opening sentence cleanly. A reader skimming on a phone gets what they came for.
Write paragraphs that stand on their own
AI tools often quote a single paragraph with no surrounding context. Phrases like “as mentioned above” or a vague “it” break that paragraph once it’s pulled out. Name the subject again. Keep each paragraph on one idea. This also makes your content easier for people to scan.
Use structured data
Schema markup tells machines what your content is. For a law firm, the useful types include LegalService, Attorney, Article with a named author, and FAQPage. Google shows FAQ rich results far less often than it used to, but the markup still labels your content in a way crawlers understand.
Keep your details consistent everywhere
Language models cross-check. If your firm name, address, and practice areas differ between your website, your Google Business Profile, Avvo, Justia, your state bar listing, and LinkedIn, the AI has less confidence in any of them. Clean up those listings. Mentions in local news and legal directories add weight.
Make sure the content is actually readable
Some sites hide key text inside tabs, accordions, or scripts that load after the page. Crawlers may miss it. Your most important answers should live in plain HTML on the page.
LLM Optimization vs. Traditional SEO
| Traditional SEO | LLM Optimization | |
| Main goal | Rank a page high in search results | Get your content quoted or your firm named in AI answers |
| Unit that wins | The whole page | A passage or a single paragraph |
| What gets evaluated | Relevance, links, technical health | Clarity, factual consistency, credibility across sources |
| How you measure it | Rankings, organic clicks | AI mentions, referral traffic from AI tools, branded search growth |
The two overlap more than they differ. Strong technical SEO and good content feed both.
How to Tell If It’s Working
Measurement is still rough, but you can track real signals. Once a month, ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google the questions your clients ask, and record whether your firm shows up. In Google Analytics 4, watch for referral traffic from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. A steady rise in people searching your firm by name is another good sign that AI tools are sending awareness your way, even when they don’t send a click.
How Peak Marketing Approaches LLM Optimization
We don’t sell LLM optimization as a separate package. Because our campaigns run on hours instead of fixed deliverables, we can put time where it will do the most good. For many firms, that means rewriting the pages that already rank so they answer questions directly, before writing anything new. It also means fixing directory inconsistencies, adding schema, and checking that AI crawlers aren’t blocked.
We report on this the same way we report on everything else. You’ll see which questions we tested, where your firm appeared, and what we changed.
The Short Version
AI assistants are becoming the first place people go with legal questions. LLM optimization makes sure your firm’s content is clear enough to quote and credible enough to trust. Most of it builds on SEO fundamentals you may already have in place. If you want to know how your firm shows up in AI answers today, talk with the team at Peak Marketing. We’ll run the questions your clients are asking and show you exactly where you stand.
